CAMERA INDICA 19TH CENTURY PHOTOGRAPHY IN INDIA
Today photography is ubiquitous and through the lens of a smartphone every owner has turned into a photographer. Behind this revolution is a history of invention spanning almost two hundred years.
Aditya Ruia will speak about the advent of photography in India, its elite status and the use of this invention by the Colonial State. The talk will focus on India's response to early photography and India's own unique appropriation of this art form.
Aditya is an Art Advisor, Curator, Researcher and Collector of Indian art with an experience of 30 years. He has been an awardee of The Export Promotion Council of India twice and has held shows through the Bombay art gallery, and in collaboration with Chatterjee and Lal. Two Publications Nathdwara: “Photography as Propaganda” (2016) and “What Freedom Looks Like” (2018) are available on Academia.edu.
