BUNKAR -THE LAST OF THE VARANASI WEAVERS
“To be part of that generation which watches in silence as we lose a heritage of this magnitude would be very tragic and so, instinctively I knew I had to play my part and help these weavers.”
It was with this thought that Satyaprakash Upadhyay embarked on his maiden documentary film “Bunkar – The Last of the Varanasi weavers”. It is the compelling story of an art that has thrived for thousands of years but today, is finding itself at the doorstep of ruin. The hour-long film traces the history of the handlooms of Varanasi and meditates over society's role in helping preserve this treasure. The film has been well received by audience's world over and has won the highest honour for films in India – the National Award for Best Film (Arts and Culture) 2019. Join us for a screening of the film and a casual conversation with the filmmakers and textile revivalist Smriti Morarka about the role we can play in helping these weavers of Varanasi.
There will be a charge of ` 150 per person.
