THE TESTAMENT OF MARY
Continuing with our exploration of books that endorse this year’s Indus theme, Celebrating Womanhood, we have chosen this extraordinary work because it’s main character has influenced the lives of women for centuries: Mary, the mother of Jesus.
“The Bible tells us little about the interior life of Jesus Christ’s mother. In this brave and thoughtful novella, Colm Toibin fills in the gaps….The Testament of Mary is an important and persuasive book: Toibin’s weary Mary, skeptical and grudging, reads as far more true and real than the saintly perpetual virgin of legend. …Toibin is a wonderful writer: as ever, his lyrical and moving prose is the real miracle.” Naomi Alderman, The Guardian.
Note: The Testament of Mary was shortlisted for the 2013 Booker Prize
Book for January: The Commoner, by John Burnham Schwartz
